by cvb 19 Feb 2010 2:39 PM MERCED – The City of Merced and Great Lakes Airlines announced today that flights between Merced Regional Airport and McCarran International Airport Las Vegas would begin April 7. The airline will offer two flights to Las Vegas each day, and two flights from Las Vegas to Merced. The current air service to Ontario International Airport in Southern California will be discontinued. The new air service will provide Merced with a destination that had been popular in past years for Merced residents. Under a previous air carrier, Merced saw nearly 10,000 enplanements to Las Vegas and that was going to the smaller North Las Vegas Airport. The Great Lakes Airlines service to McCarran offers passengers better connections, and is close the downtown action. In addition to being a destination, Las Vegas also is one of the major air hubs in the country. Great Lakes passengers would be able to connect to more than 30 different air carriers based at McCarran. Domestic flight connections include Honolulu, Washington and New York. Among the international destinations that passengers can connect to are Canada, Mexico, France and England. The Merced Regional Airport is one of only 30 airports in California with scheduled passenger air service. It is the base for the County’s Medi-Flight air ambulance service, and also FedEx, and UPS. There are 82 planes based at the airport, ranging from small single engine aircraft to corporate jets. The Airport has an average of 199 operations a day, including general aviation and passenger flights. The City first opened its airport on April 3, 1932 and started providing passenger services several years later. During World War II, the Army Air Corps took control of the airport, but passenger flights resumed by 1946. Established in 1979, Great Lakes Airlines provides scheduled passenger service to 59 airports in 17 states. The carrier has been flying from Merced since 2008.
